While nowadays many insurers will still provide a payout for stolen or lost belongings even if you don’t have the original receipt, travel insurance claims are often affected if you cannot produce one. If you can, keep your receipts alongside your travel insurance policy for easy claims.
Most travel insurers will make it clear in the small print what they will accept when you are claiming for lost belongings. Original receipts are by far the best form of authentication you can offer.
If you purchase things when traveling, keep the original receipts in a different place to the item. If you lose items you bought abroad you can still claim for them, but you will need to be able to show the receipts.
Check with your insurance company if you’re insuring jewelry or gifts where you don’t have the receipt. If you can, leave the seriously valuable items at home where they’re covered on your home contents insurance and less likely to be lost.
