How to Handle a Legal Problem Abroad

Every year thousands of US citizens get into legal trouble abroad. Hundreds of citizens are arrested and detained for crimes or activities ranging from car accidents to murder. What can you do if you find yourself in legal trouble overseas? Can your international travel insurance help? What does your travel insurance cover?
You may think of calling your attorney at home in the US when you get into legal trouble abroad. But this attorney may not be able to help you overseas, or with the kind of problem you encounter. For example, a tax attorney in the US will not handle an accidental injury case in the Philippines.
Most international travel insurance policies provide a legal hotline you can call. Use this number to avoid being scammed by local lawyers or wasting time trying to track down attorneys that are recommended by the embassy.
Your insurance company should be able to direct you to one of a network of trusted local lawyers who can speak your language. A local lawyer who knows cases like yours and who knows how to work in the country could make all the difference to getting a positive resolution for your problem.

Are you going on the trip of a lifetime to a country where you’ll visit the desert? Deserts are exciting and beautiful but they can also be challenging and dangerous. Follow our tips for successful desert hiking, and don’t forget your international travel insurance. You don’t want to be caught out in the desert without travel insurance.
Avoid walking in the desert during the hottest part of the day. You should try to do the majority of your hiking before 10am and after 4pm. When you walk, keep a slow and steady pace and rest as much as you need. Don’t overstretch yourself – desert distances can be deceptive.
Be careful where you step. There are poisonous spiders and snakes living in some deserts. Be careful not to step over rocks or put your feet on a creature.
Beware of storms and floods if you’re travelling in the summer, when the heat in the desert can produce flash rain storms and flooding. If you see a storm approaching, try to reach shelter as soon as possible.

Your travel insurance policy could change so it is important to check the policy before you fly, to make sure you know what you are covered for. Your travel insurance is important to protect you and your family from health problems and loss of baggage, but the exact policy may be different now to when you took it out.
It’s important to know exactly what your travel insurance policy covers so there are no surprises when you come to claim. Forewarned is forearmed, and when you know the details you can avoid any complications.
It is easier to check your policy before you go than it is check when you are on vacation and an emergency happens. Familiarize yourself with the policy in the comfort of your home.
Make sure you buy travel insurance as soon as you book your vacation. This ensures you don’t forget about it – leading to a mad rush at the airport – and also that you have time to shop around for the best deal.
