Do Before You Go: Tips for Safe Travel
First, book your dream vacation or pay for your flights abroad for your summer trip. Next, get your preparations started so you can enjoy a stress free, safe trip overseas. There are many things you can do to safe yourself money, stress and risk. Try to do the following before you go and enjoy the benefits of a well-planned vacation abroad.
Sign up for the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program so the State Department can assist you in an emergency. The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program is a registration service where you enter your details and your travel plans. If there is a crisis where you are traveling the government will be able to more easily contact you and offer assistance.
Check your travel insurance cover. Most home health insurance plans do not cover treatment and medical emergencies abroad. You will need to take out an international travel insurance plan that covers your health and your belongings. You can also choose to take out a plan with trip cancellation cover or emergency evacuation benefits.
Make sure your passport is valid. Sign it, and fill in the emergency contact information in the back. Leave a copy of your passport at home, along with a copy of your itinerary and your contact details while away. Do some research into your destination including safe travel in the country, where to stay, local laws and customs, and any vaccinations you need to get before you go. Take precautions to ensure you don’t become a victim of crime, such as buying secure carriers for money, and making sure you don’t carry a lot of cash with you at any time. Leave your expensive and conspicuous jewelry at home.
