  • How to Handle a Legal Problem Abroad

Every year thousands of US citizens get into legal trouble abroad. Hundreds of citizens are arrested and detained for crimes or activities ranging from car accidents to murder. What can you do if you find yourself in legal trouble overseas? Can your international travel insurance help? What does your travel insurance cover?

You may think of calling your attorney at home in the US when you get into legal trouble abroad. But this attorney may not be able to help you overseas, or with the kind of problem you encounter. For example, a tax attorney in the US will not handle an accidental injury case in the Philippines.

Most international travel insurance policies provide a legal hotline you can call. Use this number to avoid being scammed by local lawyers or wasting time trying to track down attorneys that are recommended by the embassy.

Your insurance company should be able to direct you to one of a network of trusted local lawyers who can speak your language. A local lawyer who knows cases like yours and who knows how to work in the country could make all the difference to getting a positive resolution for your problem.
