  • Vaccinations and Overseas Travel

Is it important to find out about vaccinations before you travel? Surely the chances of you falling ill with a disease more serious than a cold or stomach upset are rare? The fact is, doing your research about vaccinations is essential. The correct vaccinations could save your life. Make sure you ask your physician or a travel clinic about the right vaccinations for your trip at least one month before you travel. Vaccinations and travel insurance are the two most important items on your pre-travel check list so make sure you don’t forget either.

There are routine vaccinations that you probably received during your childhood and into your adult life. Check that you are up to date on your routine vaccinations. If you aren’t sure whether you have already received a certain vaccination it is often best to have it just in case – your physician can advise you on this when you attend your appointment. Routine vaccinations effectively protect you from diseases that rarely occur in the United States but are common in other parts of the world.

Sometimes you will need vaccinations that are recommended for certain parts of the world, and at other times you won’t need these shots. The necessity depends on where you are traveling, at what time of year, whether you have been immunized before, your age and your current health status. It is a good idea to be as fully protected as possible with vaccinations and international travel insurance – although you have to pay for this protection; it is worth it in the long run.

There are certain vaccinations that are required by certain countries at the border. This includes yellow fever protection, which is currently required by certain countries in South America and Africa. Check before you travel to avoid any problems.
